What is a sanitary pad?

The sanitary pad is cleverly designed to absorb blood easily and to stop the blood from leaking. The outermost layer of the sanitary pad has a soft surface so that it feels comfortable against your body. Inside, there’s a core made of amongst others materials cellulose. This absorbs the blood and makes sure that it stays inside the pad. On the underside of the pad, there’s a plastic membrane that stops the blood from leaking out that way. Underneath the sanitary pad, there are sticky strips that provide extra protection. Some pads have wings on the side to make sure that you don’t get any blood on the edges of your panties and keeps the sanitary pad in place.

When you use a sanitary pad, start by removing the protective paper on the back. Place the pad in the centre of your panties (with the sticky side down, otherwise it won’t feel very nice at all!). If the pad is sitting crookedly, remove it carefully and put it back straight – otherwise, the blood could leak outside the pad. Change your sanitary pad every 3 to 4 hours, except during the night, when you can wear the same night-time pad all night long. If your period is heavy, you can change more often – just do what feels right for you.
