What is a menstrual cycle?

You’ll have a period approximately once a month and it will last 3 to 8 days. After that, there’ll be a 28-day break (between 21 and 35 days is normal too) until it’s time for another period. To put it simply, the whole thing takes as long as it takes for the moon to travel once around the earth! This is called the menstrual cycle.

The length of the menstrual cycle varies from one person to another, as does the number of days that you bleed. Some women only bleed for a few days, whilst others bleed for more. If you are still young, your menstrual cycle might be irregular. This means that it’s difficult to know exactly when your period will start. The gap between your period could stretch from several months to a few weeks. This is normal and will sort itself out with time.
