How long does a period last?

On average, a girl typically starts menstruating sometime between 11 and 14 years of age. 50% of all 12 year olds have had their first periods. But the “normal” age ranges from 9 to 16. The length of each cycle varies, but the majority of females have a cycle ranging from 21 (short cycle) to 35 (long cycle) days. Likewise, how many days you bleed will also vary, from 3 to 8, with 4-6 days of bleeding being the most common. In her life, a contemporary woman is expected to have somewhere between 400 and 500 periods.
