What is endometriosis?

If you experience beyond horrible cramps, you could have endometriosis. Each month (if a woman is not pregnant) the body sheds the mucous membranes that line the uterus, resulting in the blood flow we know as menstruation. For most women, periods are a sign that the body is working as it should be. It can be troublesome to bleed, but no cause for alarm. For 5-10% of all women however, menstruation is associated with great pain, caused by a condition called endometriosis. A female with endometriosis has tissue just like that lining the uterus, but she has it in other places too, most commonly within the pelvic region. When the body tries to shed this tissue, the blood has nowhere to go if it’s in the wrong place. This may lead to inflammation and sometimes to the formation of scars or cysts.

Endometriosis can be very painful. If you suspect that you have endometriosis, do schedule an appointment with a gynaecologist to find out about the many ways to soothe the pain associated with the condition.
